Finny in the meantime continues to draw Gene into a private world inhabited by just the two of them. While the general enthusiasm of the boys wanes, Finny comes up with plans for a Winter Carnival. There is a ski-jumping contest, prizes, judges, and even, by Finny’s request, a torch carrier from Olympus to open the games. The Winter Carnival is Finny’s self-styled Olympics, and he enters Gene in the decathlon event. All in all, Finny establishes a separate peace for the boys and Devon. This peace is abruptly shattered when a telegram arrives from Leper, who has escaped and needs help. The boys are forced to realize that war - in the form of Leper’s unhappiness - has broken in upon them at last in a real and important way. Leper’s telegram thus brings to a close a major portion of the book.
